A blog from former Tulsan and lifetime TYPros member Kristin Ware

All By My Lonesome

Posted: Sep 7, 2010

In Tulsa, I was blessed to have many family and friends to call when boredom hit. I always had someone to play tennis with, to run with, or even go shopping with (even though all my friends have been through the Kristin Shopping Experience that encompasses trying to find the shoes with “some brown but not that much brown.” And, no, I don’t know why I still have friends).

The worst part of Miami is being on my own. I lost my best friend to a world of studying and 16-hour clinical days, and everyone else is still basking in Tulsa glory. I’ve made a few friends, but again, when I need a passport to get to Kati’s place or three hours in traffic to visit Jennifer, we do lots of Facebook chatting.

I have to say, though, maybe this being on my own can be a good thing. I’ve gotten better at shopping by myself (all while realizing how annoying I can be now that I’ve shopped with me all by myself). And, last year, I trained for and ran the Disney World Goofy Challenge all by my lonesome. The Goofy Challenge is part of marathon weekend at Disney World and is made up of running the half marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday. Goofy, if you will. This would have never happened in Tulsa – if I couldn’t fast-talk a friend into that kind of crazy with me, I wouldn’t have done it at all.

I did find out this weekend that there are some things I just shouldn’t be left alone to do. I’ve decided to start training for Goofy again (and start praying that I can come up with the entry fee that’s as high as the top of Cinderella’s castle), and while I enjoy training, street running can get monotonous. So yesterday, I went for a trail run. This? The something I shouldn’t do by myself.

Between screaming knees, a raging case of West Nile, and bumps and bruises from my clumsiness (see “falling down when taking off my pants” description from last week) I decided that hiking worked much better. And getting lost on the Rocky Mile trail was not my best moment. So, next time, I will take my own personal outdoors expert, also known as The Joe. He remembers important things like bug spray and where we parked the Jeep.

P. S. - The other thing I learned: Oleta River State Park has nothing on Turkey Mountain. Just sayin’.

I love how my dear Tulsa offers many opportunities to hang out with friends to just relax – restaurants, bars, sporting events and parks
