1. What are the goals of TYPros?
Giving Tulsa's Young Professionals a voice ... A voice in our community. A voice in the business community. And ultimately, a voice in our future. Tulsa's Young Professionals is a quality group of diverse young professionals working together to showcase Tulsa as a cool place to live, work and play. The mission of TYPros is to retain and attract young talent, while focusing on fostering the next generation of leadership. TYPros provides its members with opportunities to get in front of and build relationships with local community and business leaders.

Not only does TYPros give young professionals a voice - it gives them an outlet for affecting change in the Tulsa community. TYPros seeks to work hand-in-hand with current community and business leaders to learn from their experiences and to create a young professional-friendly atmosphere.

TYPros objectives include:
  • Focus on attracting and retaining young talent
  • Develop, enable and educate Tulsa's next generation of leadership
  • Work to make Tulsa a great place to live, work and play for young professionals
  • Showcase Tulsa as a dynamic community to young professionals
  • Address issues affecting this demographic and work to find solutions

Eight work crews have been established, each working towards different goals. These work crews include:

Ambassadors/Membership
Purpose: to greet new members at social events, making them feel welcomed as well as serving as ambassadors of Tulsa, promoting Tulsa to interested parties, including companies or individuals. This crew also leads membership efforts for TYPros.

Next Generation Leadership
Purpose: To develop strategies to promote leadership opportunities and education for young professionals.

Government Relations
Purpose:To identify and address issues that affect YPs and the future growth of Tulsa.

Diversity
Purpose: To identify opportunities to promote and encourage diversity and inclusion in the region, as well as the organization.

Colleges & Universities
Purpose: To develop strategies to promote Tulsa and TYPros to local college and university students.

Special Events
Purpose: To develop and execute special events for TYPros members, leadership and advisory council.

Business Development
Purpose:To facilitate and support the creation and growth of new and existing young professional-friendly businesses.

Sustainability
Purpose:. To promote best sustainable practices in the Tulsa metro area's public and private sectors.

2009 proved to be another successful year for TYPros
Tulsa’s Young Professionals increased its momentum in 2009, continuing to serve as the voice of young professionals in Tulsa and reaching a membership of more than 6,300 by year’s end. The organization hosted more events than ever, including a signature event, the Green Gala, and a new F.I.T. (Fitness in Tulsa) series.

Internship Program (led by the colleges and universities crew)
  • Launch of internship web site, www.internintulsa.com
  • Completion of comprehensive internship guide for businesses, “Hire Education” – encourage your business to post internship opportunities and take advantage of this guide if they haven’t already.
  • Coordination of summer events for interns
  • Implemented “Tour of Tulsa” as an incentive for summer interns to see the city
  • Developed databases to better reach students, HR professionals and college career centers
  • Continue to attend career fairs to promote the site as well as Tulsa and TYPros to college students

Business Incubator which would foster young entrepreneurs (led by the business development crew)
  • Laid groundwork for a first-class business incubator in Tulsa through collaboration with Step-Up Tulsa initiative and built momentum with young professionals to take leadership positions in implementing the business model
  • Developed incubator business plan
  • Conducted meetings with potential funding resources and potential partners (e.g. university, business and community leaders) to discuss incubator plans and collaboration
  • Collaborating with Step-Up Tulsa and other partners as appropriate
  • Continue to assist Step-Up Tulsa with the Innovation Institute, particularly the business incubator
Rock the River/River Initiative (led by the government relations crew)
  • Conducted survey concerning river development
  • Took a stand based on survey results and mission of TYPros – talent attraction and retention
  • Hosted Rock the River – over 3,000 YPs in attendance and more than 300 YPs registered to vote
  • Assisted with Hands across the River
  • Helped with campaign efforts
  • Speaking engagements
  • Spreading the word


Dfest Partnership (led by the ambassadors and special events crews)
  • Secured 75-100 volunteers for Dfest
Assisted with promoting event and spreading the word (Dfest brought in 40,000 visitors to downtown Tulsa)

Some other things to note:
  • TYPros Members Engaged on Boards (led by the next generation leadership crew) TYPros in partnership with Leadership Tulsa matched over 85 young professionals as “interns” on community boards. 
  • Organized successful Diversity and Dialogue event (led by the diversity crew)
  • Launch of new TYPros brochures and T-shirts (led by the marketing crew)
  • Attended National YP Summit, Louisville, KY – TYPros was considered to be among the best YP groups in the nation.
