Street CReD

TYPros hosted the second annual Street CReD event in West Tulsa's Red Fork area on April 13 and 14. This year's event, entitled Red Fork Revival, focused on reviving the area's rich history and building on the growing enthusiasm for Route 66.

TYPros would like to extend a big thank you to the many volunteers that made the event run smoothly, the Urbanists Crew for their leadership and vision and the Street CReD planning committee for all of its work and preparation leading up to the event. A special thanks also goes to the Buffalo Lounge, eMerge Dance Festival and Crystal City Carnival for partnering with TYPros to help make the event even greater than envisioned. TYPros would also like to thank all of the performers, vendors and community partners who participated in the event. Finally, a big thanks goes to all of Street CReD’s sponsors who made the event possible, including our presenting sponsors: Kline Tools, SAIC, Flying Colors Media and Western Sun Federal Credit Union.

Street CReD Rewind
2012 - TYPros put a spotlight on West Tulsa with the second annual Street CReD on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14. In the three weekends leading up to the event, TYPros volunteers descended on Red Fork, working countless hours, cleaning up old buildings and repainting store fronts to create a spruced up venue for vendors to set up temporary shops, booths and exhibits. This paved the way for a two day event showing off Red Fork’s potential to become a historic Route 66 tourist destination, with a diverse mix of people and culture.

While weather conditions were not always ideal, TYPros volunteers showed steadfast dedication and braved the conditions to come out and support the event. A storm on Friday night of the event didn’t stop the performers, as the eMerge Dance Festival literally danced in the rain, while Oklahoma powerhouse Fiawna Forte moved inside the Route 66 museum for a private acoustic performance.

The following morning, the sun was shining bright and both volunteers and the community came back strong. Hundreds of attendees traveled by trolley up and down Southwest Blvd. visiting three distinct areas set up for the event. Vendors such as Soapful Sisters, Simply Charming and Must Stash, set up outside the Crystal City Shopping Center, offering attendees a variety of clothing and merchandise to shop. Inside the shopping center, Archer Market filled a vacant space, creating a view of what a neighborhood grocery market might look like there. As part of the Market, a wish-list wall was set up for attendees to write ideas for what they would like to see in the space. After getting their shopping fix, event goers could enjoy delicious burgers, served up by McNellie’s outside.

Also outside the shopping center, community partners, including the YWCA and the Arts and Humanities Council, visited with attendees regarding their non-profits and offered fun activities for children. Opportunities for family fun extended well into the parking lot, where the Crystal City Carnival was set up for the weekend, offering traditional carnival rides, games and food.

Meanwhile, down Southwest Blvd. at the Route 66 Village concert venue, bands such as Bandelier and The Outset as well as other musicians rocked the stage, while Fassler Hall served up a cold brew for the adult attendees. Nearby, the pop up Route 66 museum gave community members a walk through the history of Red Fork. Famous Route 66 historian and author Michael Wallis, who also played the voice of the Sherriff in the movie Cars, was on hand sharing historic knowledge and emphasizing the importance of the mother road to the community’s culture.

TYPros could not have been more pleased with the response from volunteers and the West Tulsa community. The event demonstrated the growing enthusiasm for reviving Route 66 and reminded all of Tulsa what a true hidden treasure Red Fork is.
